    Haha yeah! Finally I clicked on the right video. That is actually awesome bro. And it's already improved my technique and sound after maybe 15-20 mins of pausing and practicing. 😊 I mean I've worked on my vibrato for years (or over the years rather) a fair bit and has private lessons, read books and articles, watched lots of different videos on here... and sure its improved but never really felt right or felt comfortable or sounded quite right. Even in time, start slow then faster, all I could do ok but still. But how you explained the thumb position and wrist movement, the finger positions and angle and way of grabbing and moving the other strings out of the wayand not using the finger to push etc.... THAT'S making all the difference and feels alot more professional! And the rest of the lesson really tied it in. Its still going to take some time to get used to it like its natural without thinking much but, i can tell itll get me there with every properly executed bend. The first finger bending im not 100% on the mo yet but ill comebback andvrewatch and il get it. Wow I typed so much, a sign of how pleased I am haha. Thanks brother. Youre a champion. 😊 Ps: I'm kinda annoyed i was never shown that way before though haha. And wonder what other little things like it i dont know im not doing or doing wrong that could make such a improvement? Gee its only my first video of yours but, if all your video's help that much, ill be a happy and generous camper! 😁

    Love the vid! Super helpful. However, I disagree that you need to have the same pick motion when playing fast vs slow. Their are plenty of blues players that don’t have this but above a certain speed they switch into a new mode. I willing to be wrong here so what do y’all think?

    • @JonBjork
      @JonBjork 14 годин тому

      Thanks! The only issue with switching is that you can get a gap of a certain tempos that occur right before you need to shift that will feel super awkward. There's no one size fits all in music though and it'll depend on your overall goals.

    This is why I crap out on 9's. I play aggressively and knock the note out of tune more times than not. Though when I get it right I liked the sound. So for now sticking with 10's or above

    Hey man have you ever analyzed/learned bits of early Petrucci solos, I'm thinking of from like "The Killing Hand" -- "Afterlife" and other really early tunes. Apparently he incorporated a lot of Yngwie licks, could be a cool breakdown for a video. Peace!

      Hey! I played "A Fortune In Lies" and "Ytse Jam" back in the day with two of my bands. Not a big fan of this record though, it's so poorly mixed compared to the subsequent records so didn't really pay much attention to it besides these two songs.

    • @JonBjork
      @JonBjork 8 днів тому

      Hey! For the main licks/ideas I record it with the Neural Dsp Archetype Petrucci plugin to get the best sound for that. For the lesson segment it's the same setting but my guitar comes out of my studio monitors straight into the room and gets picked up by my clip on mic. It would take forever to try to balance and "duck" the guitar out while talking otherwise.

    Hi Jon, Thanks for sharing videos like these - they are both inspiring and educational! I'm curious to know is this how you personally practice a concept ?(Yngwie 6s in this case) working on it for an hour straight? Or is it for the purpose of the video here?

    • @JonBjork
      @JonBjork 10 днів тому

      Hi Josh! I do both, it depends on the purpose. If I want to really get into a specific sequence I do something like this, if it's for general improvement and/or maintenance I'll do a set of exercises instead. So like most thing, it depends.

    Great that you played that solo, I've been practicing that part of the solo for a year! But the rest is just... impossible. Don't get me wrong, the first part is also impossible at 100% speed, but at least I manage to play it at about 70%. But woth his "flowing" parts of the solos, it's just too fast, weird and "flowing". Yngwie has such a weird phrasing and across the bar playing, combined with feeling and not perfect "in time", which I find easier to play :) I'm probably lacking the feeling and have just practised a lot more with a metronome with exact tabs...

    • @petas874
      @petas874 13 днів тому

      I've combined this part with your alternate picking exercises, especially the violin thing, playing alternate speeds, fast-slow and slow-fast. That really made a difference when it comes to avoid tensing up.

    • @JonBjork
      @JonBjork 13 днів тому

      I’ve never bothered learning his solos as they’re mostly improvised anyway and he wouldn’t be able to (or want to) recreate them exactly himself. His timing is what makes him sound so much more musical than most other shredders to my ears as well. You can learn his solos note for note though if you really want to, Cesario Filiho does that probably as well as possible.

      @@mikey-dubs I understand why it might seem like playing legato and improving rapidly requires natural talent, but I can assure you, that's not the case. If I was so talented, why did I have to put in thousands upon thousands of hours of practice? The truth is, talent is only a small part of the equation. The students who come to me with specific goals don't magically become more talented-they get better because they learn how to practice effectively. The key to improvement is not inherent ability, but rather the dedication to honing your skills through focused, intentional practice. This "it must be nice" way of thinking will hold you back from reaching your potential. Instead, shift your mindset to focus on what you can control: your practice habits. Effective practice techniques can lead to significant improvement, regardless of your starting point. I highly recommend reading the book "Peak" This book provides a great perspective on how deliberate practice, not talent, is the foundation of expertise. www.amazon.com/Peak-Secrets-New-Science-Expertise-ebook/dp/B011H56MKS Keep pushing forward, and you'll be surprised at what you can achieve with the right approach! I find your approach to the improvement of skills realistic primarily because you describe what I've experienced. I'm in the unique situation of having to regain controlled movement in my right arm due to a stroke. Having lost a tremendous amount of muscle control in my right side, I began with the simple basics of coordination/syncopation, and then focused on the skills of the fret hand vs picking hand. I had to go through the fundamental process of determining the best recovery. And that process involved exactly what you described at the outset of this video! Much has to do with neuroplasticity which is something we all can benefit from through repetition of behavior. So indeed, practicing the tedious sequences matters. Personally, the exercises are enjoyable given the improvements I'm seeing over time.
